Frequently Asked Questions
What does the ARE Project Development and Documentation exam test, and what should I expect on exam day?
The PDD exam tests your ability to take a project from developed design all the way through construction documentation. You will work through scenario-based questions covering building systems integration, structural systems, material selection, construction assemblies, and documentation practices. The exam wants to see that you can not only produce construction documents but also coordinate them across disciplines and make sound technical decisions that get a project ready for bid and construction. Many of the questions put you in situations where multiple systems interact, and you have to determine the best approach given real project constraints. It is a technical exam, but the emphasis is firmly on judgment and coordination, not just recall.
I produce construction documents regularly at work. Will my day-to-day experience be enough to pass PDD?
Your experience is a real advantage, but it will not carry you through on its own. The PDD exam tests documentation and coordination at a level of technical depth and breadth that most candidates do not encounter in a typical work week. On the job, you may focus on one building type, one set of systems, or one phase of documentation. The exam covers all of it, building systems, structural systems, materials, assemblies, and how they all tie together across a complete set of documents. How is PDD different from PPD, and should I take them at the same time?
PPD and PDD are closely related but test different phases of the design process.
